GROUP EXHIBITION: PLEIN AIR
MATTHEW MARKS is pleased to announce Plein Air, the next exhibition in his gallery at 522 West 22nd Street.
through April 18, 2026
Plein Air is an exhibition of recent sculptures by Robert Gober, along with an exhibition Gober has organized devoted to the work of the painters John Folinsbee and Harry Leith-Ross.
Robert Gober’s new sculptures are made from a wide variety of materials including bronze, pewter, wood, handblown glass, acrylic paint, and handmade paper. Several of the works include their own internal lights. All were made in the artist’s New York studio over the past three years.
John Folinsbee (1892–1972) and Harry Leith-Ross (1886–1973) were members of a group of American painters known as the Pennsylvania Impressionists. They met in 1913 at The Art Students League and became lifelong friends and colleagues.
Robert Gober (b. 1954) has participated in numerous international exhibitions, among them five Whitney Biennials and five Venice Biennales, including the 2001 Biennale, where he represented the United States. His work was the subject of a large-scale survey at The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2014. Other one-person museum exhibitions have been organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Dia Center for the Arts in New York, the Serpentine Gallery in London, the Jeu de Paume in Paris, and the Schaulager in Basel.
